Care Bear Awards at Olympic College

Each year at the Classified Connection, Care Bears are awarded to deserving Classified Staff members and Part-time Hourly staff at Olympic College. These individuals make a genuine difference at Olympic College. They go the extra mile day after day, and are genuinely concerned about student success and the success of Olympic College.

Every year, care bears are selected for one part-time hourly member, and two classified members. This year, an added the Rookie of the Year Bear was incorporated for a new member.

This year’s Care Bear Awards, descriptions and recipients are listed below:

Rookie of The Year Danessa Gray

Since starting at Olympic College 6 months ago, Danessa has become an invaluable member of the Early Childhood Program. Danessa has been able to set up data bases for faculty that have allowed for certificate or graduation complete of over 140 students. Danessa is a gifted artist, hard worker and has strong customer service skills.

Classified Staff Jaymie Cox-Garcia

Jaymie has been a powerhouse with a deep commitment to the students of Olympic College. Throughout the pandemic her skillset, her motivation, and her commitment have created so much support for student at a time when it was much needed. Behind the scenes, there are hours of work, far beyond the call of duty, writing funding requests, organizing cookie kits, and marshalling faculty to begin and expand programs like Mental Health First Aid on campus. As an instructor for Mental Health First Aid, Jaymie has taught faculty and staff how to recognize when someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, and the steps to take in order to ensure the individual receives the help they need.

Classified Staff Katie Guarin

Katie joined the Finance team as a student employee, was hired as a full time Fiscal Analyst 1 In-Training and has recently become a permanent employee. She is graduating in June with high marks, earning her Associates Degree.
Katie goes the extra mile daily and genuinely is concerned to help each student to succeed. At Go Live this recipient developed procedures for students to follow in the new system. In addition, she recognized students were incorrectly calculating funding requests and proactively developed a Third Party Funding Request Tool to help.
Katie is becoming the Student Financials CTC Subject Matter Expert for student accounts receivable, often answering questions and troubleshooting with other departments. The State Board Student Financials training team recognize this recipient as a Subject Matter Expert, giving her credit for a new QRG and inviting her to present her new group posting process for more efficient posting of Third Party Contract payments at an SF training for all colleges. She worked with SBCTC to develop a third party payment reconciliation query that is now available to all CTC colleges.

Part-Time Hourly Care BearCamren Bleiler

Outside the plexiglass window, through which this recipient greets students and faculty, there is a tiny pink box. The cover says, “The most wonderful thing in the world.” When one opens the box, the message, “You!!” is inside! It is typical of this recipient to greet everyone with a positive, enthusiastic yet professional approach.

On behalf of the STTACC Board, we sincerely congratulate each and every one of these recipients, and we’re celebrating together with them (from a distance)!

BBCC Childcare Spring Update

Submitted by Angela Weber,
Big Bend Community College Childcare Team

Spring is in the air, summer is almost here, and the BBCC childcare department was very
productive during the 2020 pandemic. We have missed the children at all levels, and hope it will
not be long before they will return into our care.

The staff team has been very busy rewriting all of our policies and procedures, updating our curriculum
& lesson plans and multiple hours taking advantage of trainings and webinars.

In following protocol for a safe environment, we also worked hard, using the
time to clean and organize all of the learning material and deep clean all classrooms. We even
had the classroom carpet and flooring replaced. It will be so fun to work in what will seem like a
new facility!

It is not often our team has opportunity to see other areas of campus. However, as BBCC
personnel continue to work with limited staff in some departments, our team assisted with Live
Chat, Covid-19 Contact Tracing, Financial Aid Office and the Business Office during peak times.

Winning Logo Design

In May of 2020, the STTACC Board shared a contest with our member colleges to design a logo for our Annual STTACC Conference. At the May 26 Board Meeting, the Board voted on the designs and have chosen the winner!

Winning 2021 STTACC Conference Logo designed by Jimmy Mullins
Maintenance Mechanic II at Seattle Central College

The winning logo design for the 2021 (Virtual) Conference was submitted by Jimmy Mullins, a Maintenance Mechanic II (and former Graphic Designer) at Seattle Central College.

For his time, consideration and ultimately, the winning design, Jimmy won a free ticket to the 2021 STTACC Conference ($25 value) and a $25 gift certificate to the location/ business of his choosing.

In the truest spirit of generosity, Jimmy humbly requested that the $25 STTACC Conference ticket for this year be given to someone who could otherwise not afford to attend, and for his $25 gift certificate to instead be donated to Seattle Children’s Hospital. WOW!

The STTACC Board is truly thankful for Jimmy’s endearing and creative efforts, and we are in the process of adding the $25 STTACC Conference Scholarship as well as donation to Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Stay tuned for more from the STTACC Board regarding the 2021 STTACC Conference!

Update from Whatcom Community College

“It is really nice to see people on campus again, even if from a distance!”

Submitted by Linda Compton

WCC has opened the Learning Commons for students this Spring quarter. Students can call the Student Help Desk to make an appointment to visit the beautiful new facility, must wear a face covering, and follow the social distancing protocol.  Since almost all classes are still online, WCC has not experienced a high number of students so far, but those needing computers, printers, tech support, or simply a quiet study space now have this option on campus. Faculty and staff are also able to return to their offices provided an appointment is made prior to arriving. This is primarily to track who is coming and going here on campus should there be any COVID-19 cases to trace. It is really nice to see people on campus again, even if from a distance!
